Sugar or Spice: What does Christmas smell like to You?

December 13, 2016

The home fragrance industry is big business during most months of the year but, it definitely gets a big boost during the holiday season. From scented candles with quirky names like “Holiday Magic” to cinnamon scented hand soap and fragrance oils, what would Christmas be without all of our favorite scents? The kind of wonderful smells that surround us during warm and happy moments spent with family and friends gathered around the tree or the ones that bring back childhood memories of intently looking through a glowing oven door as delicious treats were being baked. But, what exactly does Christmas smell like to you? Does the holiday season not officially start without the smell of a traditional Balsam Christmas tree or wreath? Or are you the kind of person that gets into a jollier state of mind with just one whiff of a cinnamon stick? There can be so many wonderful types of scents to choose from around the holidays that it can hard to pick just one to enjoy!

Here are just some of the most sought after Christmas scents:

Balsam and Pine-For a lot of people, nothing says Christmas like the smell of a Balsam/Pine tree or fresh holiday wreath. But, if you are someone who doesn’t want to deal with either watering a tree or cleaning up pine needles, you may like Balsam scented sticks that you can hang from your holiday tree or wreath. This will give you that smell you have been craving without any of the mess!

Cloves and Nutmeg-these traditional and richly scented spices aren’t just for holiday baking! An easy way to fill your home with these warm and comforting smells is to simply boil a handful of these spices together in a saucepan of water on the stove.

Cranberry and Orange Peel-And to keep the sensory pleasure going long after Christmas has ended, you can create a DIY potpourri using a combination of fresh cranberries, orange peel, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and cloves!

A Crackling Fire-while creating and maintaining a fire in your fireplace can be a lot of work, there is nothing more rewarding than cozying up to a blazing fire on a chilly night with the wonderful scent of crackling, burning wood to keep you company.

Apple and Cinnamon-A special and delicious treat on a cold Winter’s night that can also fill your home with a wonderful holiday aroma is a warm cup of Mulled Apple Cider with an added Cinnamon Stick.

Gingerbread-Oh the delicious and enticing smell of fresh Gingerbread baking in the oven!

Another fun and sweet smelling part of the holiday season is discovering the newly created, holiday themed scented candles from the Yankee Candle Company. With new additions every year and with names like: Home for the Holidays, Christmas Wreath and Christmas Cookie, it’s hard not to get into holiday spirit after smelling one of these, right?

Holiday Novelty products and gag gifts are almost always fun so I always get excited when I hear or read about certain “Novelty” Scents that have hit the shelves. And I must say that some of them can be borderline ridiculous! Ridiculous, you say? Some of the scents that fit perfectly within this category include: scented candles with names like Frosty Air and North Pole. But, the “My favorite things” collection from the Yankee Candle Company is by far my favorite novelty scent of the season! Because let’s be honest, what could a candle with the name “whiskers on kittens or “Schnitzel with Noodles” possibly smell like? Good? Horrible? Only one way to find out!
